I’ve become a dirty hippie… temporarily

I’m going to let you all in on a little secret of mine. It’s been going on for a little while without anyone realizing it… So I’m just going to go ahead and reveal everything. I have not washed my hair for 8 days now. …dramatic pause….

Seriously. Why did I do this? Let me first present for your examination Exhibit A:

This is a picture of me in a normal state (minus the silly face - that is simply an artifact that results from attempting to take your own picture at precisely the right angle while keeping everything in precisely the right light). This is my hair, as it used to be, regularly washed every other day or so. See the luster? The shine? No? That’s because it doesn’t exist. And I’m fairly convinced that this is a direct effect of constantly washing my hair.

So I’m running a little experiment and we’ll see what happens. According to my internet research, it could take anywhere from 10 days to 6 weeks for a person’s hair to return to it’s original balance of natural oils. This is the day I’m waiting for. From that point on, I am allowed to wash my hair, but only every 5-7 days or so. This keeps the balance going and the hair is expected to be naturally shinier, healthier and more manageable. Why am I doing this? Several reasons ranging from ridiculous to pretty practical. Maybe I’ll go into those reasons at a later date. For now, let me just summarize my hair’s condition thus far.

It’s oily, no doubt. But not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Still, I am wearing a hat every day (thank goodness this week is a cold snap). It doesn’t smell, although I do rinse it with vinegar every other day. And here’s the kicker: it is way easier to comb out and brush every day! Probably due to the extra amount of grease. But it’s great to spend 10 seconds combing my wet hair instead of 5 minutes, as I used to. Predictions? This may well work. My hair is already getting a little less grease-ball-like day by day. Stay tuned to find out the stunning conclusion.
